Wobble Boards Improve Balance And Co-ordination

A wobble board is a multi-directional balance board. A rocker board is a unidirectional balance board. They have been used in physiotherapy practices for years as rehabilitation tool.

They improve proprioception,  balance and co-ordination. Wobble Boards are suited to children 8 years and over. Rocker Boards are for children 2 – 8 years.

Proprioception is the body’s awareness of the position of a joint in space in relation to another joint or surface. There are proprioceptors in each joint.

These are sensory nerve endings that send impulses to the brain to tell it where a body part is in space. For example where the knee is in space in relation to the ankle or where the ankle is positioned in relation to the floor. It facilitates body’s ability to synchronise limb and trunk movements.

This reduces risk of dislocation, subluxation, tripping over and injuries.  After an injury the proprioceptors work less efficiently and need to be re-trained. In other cases the proprioceptors may have never developed properly as in an uncoordinated child. In both scenarios the proprioception can be improved with the use of a wobble board or rocker board.

Many athletes use wobble boards as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of ankle sprains.

When I was searching for wobble boards for my own clients there was very little variety available. So I have produced a range of wobble boards in a series of exciting themes and colours to inspire a child with balance or proprioception issues. You can order them through the online shop on this website. Go to Wobble Boards.
